The First UKCTTA National Team Championship

 

 

The First UKCTTA National Team Championship was held on 8th of February 2004 at Dulwich College Sports centre in London. The event was sponsored by See woo Foods Company, See Woo Travel, Speedy Noodle and New Peninsula restaurant.

 

The event attracted table tennis players and enthusiasts from London, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol, Kent, Milton Keynes and Wales.

 

The competition commenced at 10 am ,with a Lion Dance and martial Art show of Luk Chi Fu UK branch headed by Mr. Toby Wong.

 

There were 10 teams (3-4 players each team) competing in the senior event and 5 teams in the U18.

The initial stage of the event was in groups using the best of seven system. The winner of each group played one another using the best of nine to determine the winner.

 

The senior category, 1st runner up was London Progress team of Ray Lam, Perry Fung and Jo Jo beating the 2nd runner up Paulo Cheng Kelvin Choong and John Wong representing Sasaki of Milton Keynes but lost to Shi Guang, Li Chao and Xu Jie of Ying Hua team from Wales.

 

The under 18 category, winner was JAGS Dragon of Hung Kei Li, Kaho Cheung and Jai Chen, Runner-up was Dulwich College team of Brian, Chris, Floyd, Oscar and the third place went to Sheffield team of Chi Wa, Alan Fung and Kaci Ling.

 

The total cash prize money was £735 plus trophies and medals.

 

Ying Hua, the winner team members:

 

Li Chao: 27 years old, arrived UK 3 years ago, now Wales national coach. He used to be a player of the Szechuan Province of China.

 

Xu Jie: 25 years old, arrived UK 3 years ago. An ex-Chinese national player, she was in the Chinese national Women’s team, the World Women’s team event winner. Follow her husband Li Chao, she is the Welsh Women’s National Team Main Player. She also played for Germany in the First Division German League. She was the winner of 7 out of 10 England 2003 women’s events.

 

Shi Guang: 21 years old, arrived UK 3 years ago. A team member of the Hei Lung River Province of China.

He is a student of Leeds University studying the final year of BA in “Environment Management”. He is currently the table tennis coach of Leeds University. He has taken a year out after his second year of university and spent one year in Sweden as a coach and player.
